CHAPTER 01 / CONTEXT

Start with the story

Reuters reports that Pike was 18 when Colleen Slemmer was killed in January 1995. Pike and Tadaryl Shipp were convicted of first-degree murder. The governor denied clemency on September 28, 2026. After the September 30 execution attempt failed, Pike was taken for medical treatment and the governor called for an independent review. Her lawyers cited childhood abuse and mental-health diagnoses in their clemency request.
